For the past 32 years, Bethesda House has provided a wide range of support to women, youth, and children experiencing gender-based violence in the Durham Region, including but not limited to domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Our mission is to empower survivors through our shelter and community programming, ensuring they can rebuild their lives free from fear and violence. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, we received 3,240 crisis calls, and served 169 clients in the shelter, an increase of 37% compared to the previous fiscal year, our housing worker served 123 shelter and community clients, an increase of 35% from the previous year, and our community counsellor served 172 community clients making the need for our services even more essential to our community members.
Bethesda House is not fully funded by the Government of Ontario, and we must raise over $200,000 to provide basic services to our clients.
We offer services such as crisis intervention and support, counselling (group and one-on-one), a 24-hour crisis line, safety planning, transitional housing support, outreach counselling, information, and education to community clients who do not enter our shelter because they are not ready to leave their homes or have access to alternate accommodations. In our commitment to inclusivity, we also operate as the only pet-friendly shelter in Durham Region, a distinction we have proudly held since 2005, when Bethesda House became the only and first shelter in Ontario to be pet-friendly.
In 2023 we renovated our shelter and created two extra bedrooms for which we do not receive any Provincial funding. The cost per bedroom per year is $50,000. We are looking for sponsors to cover this cost.
